Objectives:
  1. Participants will explore digital annotation tools.
  2. Participants will learn about the basic functionality of digital annotation tools.
  3. Evaluate which digital annotation tools are best suited for use in their curriculum area.



Common Core State Standards


1.2 Reading Informational Text- Students read, understand, and respond to informational text—with an emphasis on comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, and making connections among ideas and between texts with a focus on textual evidence.

1.3 Reading Literature- Students read and respond to works of literature—with emphasis on comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, and making connections among ideas and between texts with focus on textual evidence.

Lesson 1: Introduce the technology
  • Download pdf

  • Highlight and annotate pdf
  • Submit file to Schoology

Lesson 2: Extend the use of technology
  • Brainstorm list of ways that the technology could assist them in comprehension (Read the word, Define the word, etc.)
  • Look up definitions for unfamiliar words
  • Seek additional information for unfamiliar concepts
  • Submit a summary of the article and vocab list
  • Optional activity: Discuss text online with peers for better comprehension

Lesson 3: Explain using technology
  • Research a question that they have related to the text and share their findings using VoiceThread
  • Obtain peer feedback of their VoiceThread

  • Used Adobe Acrobat app to annotate
  • Students read and annotated text using Adobe Acrobat app to annotate
  • Students submitted annotated text to Schoology for teacher review
